Job Description:The Medical Director for Trauma Services is responsible to oversee the trauma patient continuum of care including wellness and prevention, community support networks, collaborations with primary care, pre-admission work ups, perioperative care, surgical best practices, and post discharge care. The incumbent champions provider growth and development, innovation, continuous improvement, and is accountable for the success of Facilities Trauma Services. Importantly, this director promotes excellence in the fundamentals of extraordinary care by engaging physicians, APP's, and teams across Intermountain Healthcare.ScopeThe Medical Director for Trauma Services reports to the Senior Medical Director of ED/Trauma Services. The incumbent is expected to collaborate, communicate, and build relationships with all members of the healthcare team as appropriate.Job EssentialsGeneral Duties and Responsibilities:Leads the multidisciplinary activities of the Trauma Services.The Medical Director for Trauma's responsibility extends beyond the technical skills of surgery. The Medical Director for Trauma has the authority to affect all aspects of Trauma Care, including:Recommends Trauma Team Privileges.Cooperates with hospital patient care services to support the nursing needs of the Trauma Patient.Development of treatment protocols.Coordinates Performance Improvement Peer Review Process.Corrects deficiencies in Trauma Care and extends from Trauma Call those Trauma Team Members who do not meet criteria.Participates in the Trauma Program budgetary process.Identifies representatives from neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, emergency medicine, and other appropriate disciplines, who will work with the Medical Director for Trauma to identify physicians from their disciplines who are qualified to be members of the Trauma Program.Collaborates with the Assistant Medical Director, Trauma in accomplishing duties.Collaborates with the Trauma Coordinator in the development and achievement of Trauma Service goals.Specific Duties and Responsibilities:Oversight authority for critical care of injured patients which may require monitoring of health care services, making periodic rounds, and holding formal and informal discussion with individual practitioners.Chairs monthly Trauma Performance Improvement Committee (morbidity and mortality ensure all Trauma related deaths are reviews and pertinent performance improvement indicators). Ensures loop closure through various activities.Chairs regularly scheduled Trauma Grand Rounds to provide educational opportunities for all members of Trauma Team.Chairs monthly TOPIC (Trauma Operations Performance Improvement Committee) multidisciplinary meeting to address process improvement in Trauma Services.Trauma Director serves as Co-Director of the Trauma/Medical/Surgical ICU.Works with local and state EMS agencies.Participates in determining appropriate equipment and supplies for Trauma Care.Reports to Operations Officer with responsibility for Trauma Services.Training:Upon the written request of IHCHS, Contractor will provide training on General Surgery Trauma to rural facilities on topics that are directly related to IHCHS clinical program goals, Board goals, and specific quality improvement initiatives.Model Physician: This physician is the model Trauma Physician for our model healthcare system as evidenced by:Professional presentations.Professional dress.Professional proposals and business plans.Integrity, passion, and energy for the Clinical Program work.Champion of Intermountain Mission/Vision/Values and fundamentals.Effective implementation of the Intermountain operating model.Minimum QualificationsMedical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree. Education must be obtained through an ACGME or AOA accredited institution. Degree will be verified.ABMS or equivalent AOA Board Certification surgeon.

  • and -Active Utah Medical Licensure, or in process of obtaining licensure.Experience with change management with the ability to provide leadership in the adaptation and implementation of new processes or technology that enhance safety.
    • and -Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
      • and -Commitment to Trauma, as demonstrated by:
      • Current involvement in Trauma Care.
      • Has and maintains current certifications in Advanced Trauma Life Support. Certification as an instructor is preferred.
      • Minimum of 16 hours of Trauma specific Category I & II CME annually.
      • Over a three-year period, one-half of this CME must come from outside the Hospital.
      • Attendance and involvement in regional or national trauma organizations.
        • and -Be in good standing with the medical staff of the facility.Preferred QualificationsTrained in improvement science (i.e., Six Sigma, Lean, Project management, Advanced Training Program).Experience working in a complex health system (e.g., hospitals, ambulatory clinics, post-acute care).
          • and -Demonstrated leadership of clinicians.Physical Requirements:Interact with others requiring employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information.
            • and -Operate computers, telephones, office equipment, and manipulate paper requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.
              • and -See and read computer monitors and documents.
